Qateel Shifai Biography

Qateel Shifai also known as Qatil Shafai was a Pakistani Urdu poet who wrote lyrics for a few Bollywood movies like Anjaana, Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan, Naajayaz, Auzaar, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee, Waqt hamara hai etc. Evergreen song ‘Tere dar pe sanam’ from the movie - Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee is one of the memorable songs written by Shifai. He joined Bollywood in the late 1950s as an assistant lyricist and became an independent lyricist in the 1970s. Shireen Farhad (1975) and Painter Babu (1983) are some of his early works as an independent lyricist. As a lyricist he has penned lyrics for more than 2500 songs, belonging to Hindi and Pakistani movies.

 

He was born as Aurangzeb Khan on December 24, 1919 in Haripur of British India, now a part of Pakistan. Qateel Shifai is his pen name he adopted in 1938. The name was derived from the name of his mentor, Hakeem Mohammed Yahya Khan 'Shifa'. He lost his father at a very young age and was forced to discontinue his studies. Though he started business at a very young age, he was not successful and he moved to Rawalpindi where he worked in a transport company. In 1946 he started his career as an editor for a magazine in Lahore and very soon he published his first Urdu poetry.

 

“Teri Yaad” in 1955 marked his debut in Bollywood as an assistant lyricist and thus began the successful career of Shifai in film industry as a lyricist. He has also published many poetry collections and ghazals in Urdu, which have been translated to many languages. He lived in Lahore and passed away in 2001.
