Purnima Mahato Biography

Purnima Mahato is an Indian sportswoman who plays the game of archery. She has won silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 1998 and has won the Indian National Archery Championships. She currently serves as the archery coach at Jamshedpur. She also coached the Indian archers who participated in the 2008 Olympics and 2012 Olympics.

 

Purnima was born in Birsanagar in Jamshedpur and was interested in archery from her childhood days. She used to watch the game with great amusement when she was a small child. She got her initial training at Burma mines in Jamshedpur and was made as a part of the Indian national team in 1992.She went to Delhi to get training there.

 

Purnima got many medals in archery competitions both in national level and international levels. She earned gold medal in the team event at the International Archery Championship of 1993. She won six gold medals in the Pune National Games 1994. She got two medals at the National Championships of 1997 and a silver medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

 

She started to coach at the Tata Archery Academy in 1994. She also coached many participants of 2012 Summer Olympics including Deepika Kumari. She served as the coach of the Indian national teams in many events including the 2005 Senior World Outdoor Archery Championship at Spain. She also coached the Indian team that participated in the 2007 Senior Asian Archery Championship in China.

 

She coached the Indian team during the 2010 Asian Games and during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She received Ram Dayal Munda Award for Best Coach of the year in 2012 from the Government of Jharkhand on Olympic Day Run.
