Puran Chand Joshi Biography

Puran Chand Joshi, popularly known as P. C. Joshi was one of the prominent leaders and the first General Secretary of the Communist Party of India. He served as the secretary of the party during the period – 1935 to 1947. He was married to noted revolutionary leader associated with Chittagong rivals and armoury raid of 1930 - Kalpana Datta and they got married after she got released from imprisonment. They got married in 1943 while he was serving as the party secretary. Puran’s daughter-in-law is the author of the celebrated book, Do and Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930-34 (1999) which gives the sketch of the historical event. Later Ashutosh Gowariker made a Bollywood movie - Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey starring Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles, based on this novel. Abhishek reprised the revolutionary leader Surya Sen while Deepika enacted the role of Puran Chand Joshi’s wife, Kalpana Datta.

 

Joshi was born in Almora of present day Uttarakhand in 1907. He completed post-graduation from Allahabad University. He became the General Secretary of the Workers and Peasants Party of Uttar Pradesh in 1928. Joshi joined the Communist Party in 1929, and very soon rose to prominence. He got arrested by British police as he was one among the prime suspects of Meerut Conspiracy Case. He was given 6 year imprisonment and transported to Andaman Islands. But later his punishment was reduced to three years and once he returned back, he worked for bringing more people to the Communist party.

 

Joshi became the new General Secretary of the party in 1935 and served the position till Indian independence. He advocated unity with Indian National Congress, for which he received heavy criticism. Thus he was removed from the general secretaryship and suspended from the party as well. Later he continued his career as a noted journalist.
