Premji Biography

Premji was a National award winning actor of Malayalam. He was a noted stage actor as well as a character artist of Malayalam cinema. Mullamangalath Parameshwaran Bhattathiripad is his full name. He is known as M. P. Bhatathirippad and Premji, both. He was a social reformer and cultural leader also. He was a social activist who fought against the bad rules of his own caste – Nambudiri (high caste Brahmins of Kerala). He has joined in hands with many of the great social reformers of Kerala society like V. T. Bhattathiripad and E. M. S. Namboodiripad. Premji won the National awards for best actor for the movie, Piravi in the year 1989. He received Kerala State awards and Filmfare awards also for portraying the same role. He has received Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy fellowship.

 

Premji was born at a time when Kerala was experiencing a social uprising. His brother M. R. Bhatathirippad was a well known stage actor and social activist. Premji joined Yogakshema Sabha and worked with his brother as well as many great reformers of the society at that time. MRB married a widow Arya Antharjanam of 30 years at a time when marriages of Brahmin widows were completely prohibited in Kerala society. He was 40 years old then.

 

Premji started his professional life as a proof editor in Mangalodayam press, Thrissur at the age of 19. His acting career began with V. T. Bhatathirippad’s - Adukkalayil Ninnu Arangathakku, the play which is regarded as the greatest reformation drama of Kerala against many social evils of society including social and caste customs and lack of freedom of woman. Marakkudakkullile Mahaanarakam, Apphante Makal and Chavittikkuzhacha Mannu are other noted plays of Premji. He won gold medal from the Government of Kerala for his performance in the play Shah Jahan. Minnaminni was his debut movie. As a film actor, his memorable roles include - Thacholi Othenen, Niramala, Samasya, Kunjali Marakkar, Lisa, Yaagam, Thumbolarcha, Uttarayanam, Moodupadam and Piravi.
