Prem Chopra Biography

Prem Chopra’s place is among the top villains of Bollywood though he is a soft-hearted person with a lovely personality. He has placed himself among the veteran actors of Hindi cinema who has given unparallel contributions to Indian cinema. Born in a Punjabi Hindu family, his father wanted him to be a doctor. But Chopra’s passion to movies prompted him to strive that way.

 

Hi debut movie was ‘Hum Hindusthani’ of 1960 where leading actors were Sunil Dutt, Joy Mukhrejee and Asha Parekh. It was the debut movie of Sanjeev Kumar too. Then he did a Punjabi movie, ‘Chaudary Karnail Singh’ which won many National awards. His role as Shera was well appreciated. Then he did a couple of movies during early 1960’s – Mud mud ke na dekh and Main shaadi karke chale. But it was the villain’s role in Woh kaun thi in suspense action thriller ‘Woh kaun thi’ that placed him as ‘Villain of Bollywood’. Though he did a few movies as hero and supporting actor, his roles as villain were most appreciated and gradually he began to accept grey shades only to build up his career. But his role in Shaheed as Sukhdev was one among the finest roles of Prem Chopra with positive shades.

 

His notable works during second half of 60’s include Nishaan, Jhuk gaya aasman, Doli, Aamne saamne, Anjaana, Poonam ki raat, Sagaai, Teesri Manzil, Waaris, Mere Saaya and Upkar. In many movies he did the role of hotel manager or club manager with negative intensions. He continued his successful journey as villain in 1970’s too and placed himself among the most sought actors that time. Some of the most successful movies of 1970’s include Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Katti Patang, Purab aur Paschim, Gora aur kaala, Pagla kahi ka, Prem pujari, Bobby, Des Pardes, Do anjaane,  Prem Nagar, Hulchul, Aap aaye bahaar aaye, Do Musafir, Baroodh, Apraadh, Daag, Daasthan, Ajnabhi, Mehbooba, Dream girl and Trisool.

 

He did a few memorable roles in Ali Baba aur challis chor, Aas paas, Kranthi, Shaakka, Dostana, Ram Balraam and Pukar. Gradually he changed to supporting and comic actor roles and kept busy in latest Bollywood too. His recent Bollywood movies include Dhamaal, Golmaal 3, Dhamaal, Patiala House, Agent Vinod and Double Dhamaal.  He has won Filmfare awards once for supporting role in Do Anjaane. He is married to Raj Kapoor’s wife’s sister Uma.
