Preet Bharara Biography

Preet Bharara is an Indian American attorney, who currently serves as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He is listed among the top 100 influential persons of the world by Time Magazine in 2012. He came to limelight in the recent times after the prosecution of an Indian diplomat, Devyani Khobragade, which created great news in India and more tensions between the two nations. This top NY prosecutor confronts criticism from India following Devyani episode. One commentator in India called him an "Uncle Tom", comparing him to a character of a famous novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin." His brother, Vinit Bharara is the co-founder of Diapers.com, a subsidiary of Amazon.com. Preet is known for giving life sentences to many high profile terrorists like Faisal Shazad and has also prosecuted several international terrorists.

 

Bharara was born in 1968 in Ferozepur, Punjab. He moved to US at the age of 2. He was brought up in sub-urban of New Jersey. He graduated from Harvard College in 1990 and Columbia Law School in 1993. Later he served as the chief counsel to Senator Chuck Schumer, through which he rose to prominence. He also served as the assistant in United States Attorney in Manhattan for five years. He served as U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer's chief counsel, helping to lead an investigation into the firings of nine U.S. attorneys under President George W. Bush.

 

He was appointed as U.S. attorney in Manhattan by President Barack Obama in 2009. Very soon it followed hundreds of hours of wiretaps that resulted in more than 80 convictions, one of the biggest roundups of Wall Street professionals in history. But his prosecutions of some high profile people of Asians have also invited wide criticisms, the recent one being Devyani Khobragade.
