Pratibha Satpathy Biography

Pratibha Satpathy is one of the most prominent poets of Oriya language as well as Indian literature at present. Most recently in March 2014, Gangadhar Rath Foundation Trust announced prestigious Sahitya Bharati Samman-2013 for her distinguished and illustrious contributions to Oriya literature. She is a recipient of Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award in 2001, for Poetry Collection ‘Tanmaya Dhuli’. Now she is editor of famous poetry magazine ‘Udbhasa’ and has earlier served as the editor of leading Oriya magazine ‘Istahaar’ for 25 years. Apart from being popular as an Oriya poetess, she is equally popular as a great literary critic. She has also translated many English works to Oriya language.

 

She was born in 8 January 1945. Her noted poetry collections include - Ama Kavita (1962), Asta Janhara Elegy (1969), Grasta Samaya (1974), Sahada Sundari (1978), Niyata Vasudha (1980), Nimishe Akshara (1985), Mahamegha (1988), Sabari (1991), Tanmaya Dhuli (1996), Adha Adha Nakshyatra (2001) and Kahi Na Hele (2006). She has been associated with poems since childhood, where she used to play with words. She was inspired a lot by her grandfather, the renowned linguist and compiler of “the Oriya lexicon”. She also got attached to the humming of songs by her mother. She was a graduate from Ravenshaw College.

 

Since her joining days at college, she came to be known as a poetess in the literary circle. Her talents were appreciated by professors and fellow students. Very soon, she became a leading poet of Oriya language and many of her works have been translated to Hindi, English and other languages. Kalpanara Abhisekha, Spandanara Bhumi, Pratiphalana, Post Modern Oriya Poetry & other Essays and Ever Flows the River are her literary essays and criticism works.
