Pramathanath Bishi Biography

Pramathanath Bishi was a famous writer belonging to 20^th century. He was a politician and educationalist too. He wrote in Bengali language. He was a politician and parliamentarian too. He was a member of the West Bengal Legislative Council (1962–68). He served as a nominated member of Rajya Sabha during the period, 1972 to 1978. He spent 17 years in Shanti Niketan as a student, and got opportunity to become closely acquainted with Rabindranath Tagore. Bishi was a recipient of numerous literary awards. Rabindra Puraskar (1960), Vidyasagar Smrti Puraskar (1882) and Jagattarini Puraskar (1983) are the major awards received by him. He passed away on 10 May 1985.

Pramathanath Bishi was born on 11 June 1901 at Joari in Rajshahi, West Bengal. Nalininath Bishi and Sarojbasini Devi were his parents. Bishi studied at Brahma Vidyalaya in Santiniketan and passed matriculation in the year 1919. Years later he completed IA in 1927 and graduation in English from Rajshahi College in 1929. In 1932 he completed his Master’s in Bangla and did research on Ramtanu Lahiri Research Fellowship (l933-36). After that he worked as a lecturer and professor in Bengali language in several colleges.

As a writer, Bishi adapted many pseudonyms, such as Pranabi, Bishnu Sharma, Kamalakanta, Haturi, Amit Ray, Madhabya, Scot Thomson etc. He wrote and published poems, novels, short story collections, literary criticisms, essays etc. He started publishing his works since 1920s. Padma, Jodadighir Chaudhuri Paribar, Keshabati, Lal Kella, Nilmanir Svarga, Sindhudesher Prahari and Carey Saheber Munsi are some of his novels. Shrikanter Pancham Parba, Bichitra Sanglap, Svanirbachita Galpa, Galper Mato Galpa, Dakini etc are his short story collections. He also worked as an editor for a few publications.
