Pramatha Chaudhuri Biography

Pramatha Chaudhuri was one of the influential figures of Bengali literature and language who lived during the period 7 August 1868 – 2 September 1946. This writer was known as a poet, storywriter and essayist. He did both fiction and non-fiction work. His Collection of Prose and Poetical Works was published in the year 1926 titled - Pramatha Chaudhuri Granthabali. Sonnet Panchasat, published in 1913 was his collection of sonnets while Padacharan (1919) and Sonnet Panchasat and Anyanya Kabita (1961) are his other works belonging to poetry genre. Char-Yari Katha, Ahuti, Nil-Lohit, Galpa-Sangraha, Ghoshaler Tri-Katha and Nil-Lohiter Adi-Prem are among his short story collections. He has also published a huge collection of essays. Char-Yari Katha – is his magnum opus in storytelling.

 

Pramatha Chaudhuri was born in Jessore, British India in 1868. He was born into a famous zamindar family of Haripur Village in Pabna. His father was an aristocrat and a high-ranking official of the British Government and Pramatha’s childhood days were spent at many places. Till the age of 5, he lived in Haripur followed by the next 10 years in Krishnanagar of Nadia. He also studied at six different schools. He started singing at a very young age. He completed graduation in Presidency College, Kolkata.

 

His elder brother Ashutosh Chaudhuri was a good friend Rabindranath Tagore, who was a frequent visitor in the Chaudhuri residence in Mott Lane, Kolkata. Ashutosh later married Tagore’s niece, Pratibha Devi - the daughter of Satyendranath Tagore, Rabindranath’s elder brother. His brother insisted him to learn French and he became an ardent learner of French. Then he pursued Arts from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata soon after his return to Kolkata in 1887. He completed graduation in philosophy, Master’s in English and also learnt the languages Sanskrit and Italian. His attraction to poetry began when he got involved with the discussions of Tagore and his brother. He later spent 30 glorious years in the literal world and he is regarded as a great figure of Bengal Renaissance.
