Pradeep Kumar Biography

Pradeep Kumar was a popular actor of Hindi and Bengali movies. He is most known for love triangles with leading actors of yesterday – Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari. These three actors together have done a series of Bollywood movies like Behu Begam, Aarthi, Bheegi raat and Chitra lekha. Perhaps it is a record of triangular love series in Indian cinema. As an actor his best movies include Bahu beegam and Bheegi raat (with Meena Kumari), Anand Matt, Anarkali and Taj mahal (With Bina Rai), Meri Surat Teri Ankhen (with Asha Parekh), Adalat and Raat aur din (with Nargis), Ustadon Ke Ustad (with Shakila) and Nagin and Gateway of India (with Madhubala). These movies were musically big hits too and regarded as golden gems of Bollywood music.  

 

His other movies include Meri Surat Teri Ankhen, Noor Jehan, Do Dilon Ki Dastaan, Hill Station, Gateway of India, Fashion, Durgesh Nandini, Adl-E-Jehangir, Mitti me sona, Rakhi, Saheli,  Jagte raho, Jab se tumhe dekha hai, Modern girl, Ek Jhalak, Badshah, Pyar ki rahein, Sanjog, Apsara, Ghungat, Afsana, Anjaan, Pass port, Raat aur din and Detective. Meena Kumari was the most successful co-actor of Pradeep Kumar and second choice is Beena Roy with whom he did periodic movies like Anarkali, Taj Mahal and Durgesh Nandini. He was successful with Madhubala also with whom he did movies like Gateway of India and Nagin. He was a popular actor of 50’s and 60’s and during 70’s he switched on to character roles for movies like Kranti, Purana mandir, Khatta Meetha , Kaala baaz, Kaagaz ki naav, Jaltha badan and Lok parlok. He did a significant role in Rajesh Khanna – Leena starrer Mehboob ki mehndi.

 

This great actor of yesterdays was born in Kolkata and started his film career with Bengali movies. later he shifted to Mumbai. The role played in 1952 patriotic movie Anand Math proved to be the turning point of his acting career. After that he was casted opposite almost all leading ladies of B’town during 50’s – Madhubala, Nargis, Asha Parekh and Meena Kumari and gave many successful movies to film lovers. During 60’s also he continued his success journey. But with the era of 70’s with the rising stars like Rajesh Khanna, his career witnessed a down trend and he began to take supporting roles.
