Pash Biography

Pash was the pen name of noted Punjabi writer Avtar Singh Sandhu. Pash is widely regarded as one of the major poets of the Naxalite movement in the Punjabi literature in the 1970s and his leftist ideas were strongly reflected in his poems. He was killed by Khalistani extremists on March 23, 1988. He was only 37. Loh-katha (1970), Uddian Bazan Magar (1973), Saadey Samiyaan Vich (1978) and Khilre Hoye Varkey (1989) are his published works. Khilre Hoye Varkey was published posthumously. His journals and letters were also published later.

 

He was born in Talwandi Salemof Jalandhar district, Punjab. He was brought up in an environment where Naxalite movement was quite prominent against the high sectors of the society including rich and landlords. The Naxalites targeted industrialists and rich traders also. His first book of revolutionary poems, Loh-Katha was published in 1970 and he was jailed for two years with a false murder charge. Very soon he shot to prominence as a Naxalite poet who inspired the movement. He also served as the editor of a literary magazine, Siarh. Very soon he became a prominent personality of left-wing with his views through writings.

 

A revolutionary poet, he was awarded a fellowship at the Punjabi Academy of Letters in 1985. In 1986 he toured US and UK and was associated with Anti-47 Front, opposing Sikh extremist violence. Then he got involved with the revival of his visa, while staying in Punjab. He along with his friend Hans Raj was shot dead on a well on March 23, 1988 just one day before he was to leave to Delhi. It was done by Khalistani militants. Surprsingly he was shot dead on the 57th death anniversary of Bhagat Singh, Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev which is now known as Martyrs' Day.
