Parveen Sultana Biography

Parveen Sultana is a famous Hindustani vocalist from Assam. Music lovers remember her for the song, Humein tumse pyar kitna of the movie Khudrat, composed by R. D. Burman. This song is always regarded as one of the greatest evergreen romantic songs of Hindi cinema. She has also rendered her beautiful voice for songs of the movies - Gadar, 1920, Do Boond Pani and Pakeezah. She is one of the youngest recipients of Padma shri. She received the award in the year 1976, at the age of 25 only. She is a Hindustani classical singer of the Patiala Gharana. She is fondly called, ‘Queen of Classical Vocal’ by her fans. Ustad Dilshad Khan is her husband. The couple has a daughter.

 

Sultana was born on July 10, 1950 in Daccapatty, Assam. Her parents are Ikramul Mazid and Maroofa Begum. She completed her schooling at mission school. She belonged to a musical family and her early training was given by none other than her father, who was very strict. She also learnt from her grandfather Mohammed Najeef Khan. Later she studied under Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri of Kolkata and in 1973 she became a disciple of Ustad Dilshad Khan of the Patiala Gharana.

 

She gave her first stage performance at a younger age of 12. It was year 1962, and from 1965 onwards she began to record music. She has recorded for almost leading music companies including HMV, Polydor, Music India, Magnasound, Bharat Records and Auvidis. She has recorded numerous albums with her husband. They are based on different ragas and a few of those collections include thumbris too. A few of those records include - Ethereal Duo, One Plus One...In Harmony, Impeccable Soprano Parveen Sultana & Innovative Tenor Dilshad Khan, Duologue in Raga, From Dawn Until Night, Marvellous Jugalbandi, Two voices and Khayal Se Bhajan Tak. Other albums include – An hour of Ecstasy, Safar, Parveen Sultana Sings Rare Melodies, Parveen, Khayal & Thumri and Begum Parveen Sultana.
