Parvati Prasad Baruva Biography

Parvati Prasad Baruva was a cultural icon of Assam. He was a noted poet, lyricist and dramatist, popularly known as the Geetikavi. He was one of the earliest film makers of Assamese language. A few of his dance dramas are Sonar Seleng and Lakhhimi and other published books on poetry and music are Bhonga Tukarir Sur, Gungunani, Luiti and Sukula Dawor Oi Kohuwa Phul. His playwrights are Sonar Soleng and Lakhimi. Many of his poems have been translated to Hindi, English and other languages of which "If Life Be Lost" and "Life Awakens" are most popular. Born on August 19, 1904 in Sibsagar, Assam, he is also regarded as an icon of Assamese literature. He was one of the most noted cinematographers of Assam too. He has directed one movie in Assamese too, for which he produced music too. The movie was Rupohi (1941) – the fourth movie released in Assamese.

 

Parvati Prasad's great-grandfather Jaduram Deka Baruva is the author of the first bilingual Assamese dictionary in 1839. Parvati Prasad graduated in philosophy from Kolkata's Scottish Church College. He was attracted towards music, Rabindra Nritya Natyas and dramas in those days and used to watch them frequently. This proved as his experience to associate with music later. In 1921, he started a hand written monthly magazine called 'Jhupitora'. He has also acted in the role of Ananda Mahanta, a minstrel of devotional songs.

 

The first decade of 20th century saw the uplift of Assamese poetry under three poets with the name Prasad - Jyotiprasad Agarwalla (1903), Parvati Prasad Baruva (1904) and Bishnu Prasad Rabha (1909). These three are regarded as cultural icons of literature and art. This poet was always seen in white dhoti-kurta and a traditional Assamese cap on his head. Baruva died on June 7, 1964 aged 59.
