Partho Ghosh Biography

Partho Ghosh is a less-known director of Bollywood who has given suspense thrillers like 100 Days, Teesra Kaun and Agnisakshi. He is also remembered for 1993 action movie, Dalaal which starred Mithun Chakraborty, Ayesha Jhulka and Raj Babbar in lead roles. The movie was one of the highest grossers of the year 1993. Ghulam-E-Mustafa, Khote Sikkey and Yugpurush are other noted works. He made two movies with the magic trio - Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff and Manisha Koirala. The movies are Agnisakshi and Yug Purush though the second one was not able to replicate the success of Agnisakhi. In 2013 the 63 year old filmmaker shocked the film world when he was arrested for human trafficking.

He belongs to West Bengal, born in the year 1955. He shot to fame with the suspense thriller ‘100 days’ released in 1991. It was a remake of Tamil Film Nooravathu Naal, the events in the life of a woman with Extrasensory perception. The pivot role was played by the shining star of early 1990’s – Madhuri Dixit. The movie also starred Jackie Shroff, Moon Moon Sen, and Javed Jaffrey in pivot roles and the movie was a super hit. It was followed by another super hit Dalaal in 1993.

In 1994, he made Bollywood remake of Malayalam super hit, No.20 Madras Mail titled Teesra Kaun. Mithun Chakraborty enacted the role of actor himself while other star cast included Chunky Pandey, Somy Ali, Javed Jaffrey, Gouthami, Rituparna Sengupta etc. In 1996 he shot to fame with his another thriller, Agnisakshi. The movie was a remake of 1991 psychological thriller, Sleeping with the Enemy. Surprisingly the same year, two more Bollywood movies inspired from this movie was released – Daraar with Juhi Chawla and Yarana with Madhuri Dixit, the top two actresses of Bollywood then. But both the movies tanked at box office. It gave popularity to the director and its lead actress, Manisha Koirala who sustained no.1 heroine title of Bollywood with this single release.

But later he couldn’t retain his success story in Bollywood and his movies flopped one after the other. After 2002 he took a break from the industry and returned back in 2010 with Rehmat Ali and Ek Second... Jo Zindagi Badal De? But the news shocked everyone when he got arrested at Mumbai's Chattrapati Shivaji International Airport, accused of human trafficking.
