Parag Kumar Das was a journalist and former editor of Asomiya Pratidin who was killed at Guwahati by SULFA on May 17, 1996. He was a human right activist and co-founder of human rights movement in Assam. He was also the founder leader of Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS). In 1996, while bringing back his 8-year old son from school in Chandmari, Guwahati, Parag Kumar Das was assassinated at day time. His assailants shot at least eight bullets into his body as his son fled. He died at a young age of 35.

He was born in Shillong, the capital of the then undivided Assam on 24 February 1961. He came to Guwahati following the transfer of his father, a government servant. His school and college life were spent here. A brilliant student and fourth rank holder of the state – that was Parag. Later he studied at St. Stephens College and Delhi School of Economics. He returned to Guwahati in 1984. Prior to taking career as a journalist, he worked in bank for 4 years and later joined Guwahati Stock Exchange where he was the manager.

Parag initiated Human Rights Movements in Assam and used his pen to raise people’s consciousness to exploitation and suppression of weaker sections of the society. He was the executive editor of the largest daily newspaper in Assam during the attack and the newspaper was said to be sympathetic to United Liberation Front of Assam. The four accused were Mridul Phukan alias Samar Kakati, Diganta Baruah, Tapan Dutta alias Biswajit Saikia and Nayan Das alias Guli. Later Prime accused in the Parag Das murder case was acquitted and MASS leader Lachit Bordoloi expressed his disappointment with this verdict.
