Pappu Yadav Biography

Rajesh Ranjan, best known as Pappu Yadav is a popular politician, who currently serves as the leader of Jan Adhikar Party (L). A 5-time parliamentarian, Pappu Yadav defeated Sharad Yadav in the 2014 general elections from Madhepura constituency. He has earlier won Lok Sabha elections in 1991, 1996, 1999, and in 2004 from several constituencies in Bihar as an Independent, SP, Lok Janata Party and RJD candidate respectively. A very influential young leader, Pappu Yadav became one of the 'best performing' MPs in 2015. His wife Ranjeet Ranjan is also a politician and parliamentarian at present, but represents congress party. She got elected from Supaul constituency.

 

Pappu Yadav was born on 24 December 1967 in Khurda Karveli village, Purnia district, Bihar. He was born in a higher class Landlord family. He completed graduation in Political Science from B N Mandal University, Madhepura. Pappu is his pet name given by his grandfather, and he uses it. But in official records, his name is Rajesh Ranjan. He got associated with politics in the 1980s. He rose to prominence with his 1990 win of a Bihar Vidhan Sabha seat as an independent candidate. Over the years he has created a niche of his own in state politics as well as national level.

 

Pappu has made a name for himself in the politics of Bihar. In 2015 Bihar elections he made news when formed his own party, Jan Adhikar party and contested at 40 seats. But he couldn’t get major wins as he expected. He has also been surrounded by a few controversies in his political career. He released his autobiography Drohkaal ka Pathik in 2013, in which he alleged that 3 MPs of his Indian Federal Democratic Party got money from the then finance minister Yashwant Sinha, to join the NDA in 2001. In 2008, he was convicted in the murder of Communist Party legislator Ajit Sarkar and sentenced to life imprisonment. Subsequently he was debarred from the 2009 general election too.
