Pandit Narendra Sharma Biography

Pandit Narendra Sharma was a popular poet associated with Hindi language. He was a lyricist associated with Bollywood too, who wrote the popular bhajan – Sathyam Sivam Sundaran (1979) for the movie with the same title. The song still loved by millions earned him a Filmfare nomination for best lyricist for the year 1979. He also penned the popular bhajan -Jyoti Kalash Chhalke of 1962 movie, Bhabhi ki Chudiyan. Kahani Kehte Kehte, Paniharin, Rathwan and Swagatham are some of the popular poems written by Narendra Sharma. Though a few, he has penned lyrics for mythological movies such as Aandhiyan (1952) and Narasinha Avatar (1949). He was also a journalist.

 

Pandit Narendra Sharma was born on 28 February 1913 in Jahangirpur, Gautam Buddha Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh. He lost his father at the age of four and was raised by his uncle. His education was completed at Allahabad University, where he took Master’s in English. Narendra’s anthology of poems ‘Shool – Phool’ was released at age 20. He was associated with All India Radio for many years and also worked as a journalist. In 1934 he published Abyudhay newspaper and started association with Films in the late 1940s as a lyricist. Narasinha Avatar, Aandhiyan and Darmiyan are some of his early works as a lyricist. He was associated with mass media for more than 6 decades. His contributions include - Books, Films, Radio, Television etc.

 

He was a master of bhajans and his popular songs - Jyoti Kalash Chhalke and Sathyam Sivam Sundaran, both sung by Lata Mangeshkar are still loved by millions. He was also an expert astrologer, Ayurvedic healer, and a scholar on Indian History, Culture and Philosophy. Narendra Sharma was married to Susheela Sharma, a painter of oil and water colour medium. His daughter Lavanya Shah is also a writer who started writing at the age of three. Her Hindi blog is Lavanyam –Antarman, and she currently lives in US.

 

Swagatam Shubh Swagatam’ – the inaugural song of 1982 Delhi Asiad and the inaugural song for Vividh Bharti composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar were also penned the inaugural song for Vividh Bharti composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar. A bhakti poet, he penned lyrics for numerous albums.
