Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh Biography

Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh was a tabla player and musicologist. In 1974, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for his contributions to Indian music followed by Padma Bhushan in 1984, given by the Government of India. Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh was born in Kolkata in 1912, May 7. His family had musical back ground. Dwarkanath Ghose, who founded Dwarkin in 1875 and invented the "Dwarkin harmonium” was his grandfather. Pandit Ghosh was the founder of Sourav Academy of Music. He has worked as a music director of a few films during 1950’s. Jadubhatta, Andhare Alo and Rajlakshmi o Srikanta are among those beautiful compositions.

 

Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh was born in a musical family. During his childhood he was interested in sports as well as painting. He played soccer, hockey, polo and billiards. He graduated from the Scottish Church College, Kolkata. An eye injury in a soccer match prompted him to choose another option. Thus music became his popular choice. He received vocal training from noted musician Girija Shankar, Mohammed Sagir Khan and Mohammed Dabir Khan and took tabla lessons from Ustad Masit Khan of the Farukhabad gharana and Ustad Feroze Khan of the Punjab gharana.

 

Pandit has worked in AIR for 15 years as a music producer. During this time he wrote and published literal pieces of classical music, light music, modern, orchestral and choral. He has composed music for many gramophone records of other artists. He was the musician who found “Ramayangeeti” - a fusion of traditional and modern Indian music. He actively participated in musical discussions as well. For many years he has been closely associated with 'Sangeet Research Academy'. Chaturang – combination of four musical instruments, tabla, pakhawaj, kathak and tarana is his masterpiece. Tabla players Abhijit Banerjee and Anindo Chatterjee and singers, Pandit Prasun Banerjee, Ajoy Chakrabarty and Suman Ghosh were his disciples.
