Pamman Biography

Pamman was a prolific Malayalam novelist from Kollam, known for soft porn works. Many of his novels have been made to feature films. Chattakari – is his celebrated work which has been made on silver screen several times in different languages and regarded as one of the bold themes of 1970s. The novel was made a feature film for the first time in Malayalam with the same name and later made to different Indian languages including Hindi – titled Julie. Actress Lakshmi aside her husband then – Mohan Sharma acted in its Malayalam version (her debut Malayalam movie) and Vikram acted in its Hindi version and this movie is regarded as the best performance of actress Lakshmi as well.

 

Pamman received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story and it was the first Malayalam movie to run more than 40 weeks in Bangalore. Chattakari was remade in 2012 once again in Malayalam, with Shamna Kasim in the title role. The original story has an anti-climax while it’s shown as happy ending in all movie versions. Apart from Chattakari, Bhraanthu, Adimakal, Missi, Thamburatti, Ammini Ammavan, Nerippodu and Orumbattaval are his other works. He has scripted many movies for Malayalam and has authored some short stories and plays as well.

 

His real name is R. Parmeswara Menon, born in the year 1920. Most of his works sought to expose the false moralities and sexual hypocrisies of a society driven by middle-class values and they were widely accepted by youth. 'Branthu,' 'Vashalan' and 'Missi’ are among his best sellers. He retired as Deputy Chief Engineer in railways and he spent most of his professional life outside Kerala. He died at the age of 87, at a private hospital following cardiac complaint.
