Palani Subramaniam Pillai Biography

Palani Subramaniam Pillai was a Carnatic musician and percussionist of mridangam and kanjira. He was the only mridanga vidwan in the history of Carnatic music whose talent has been compared to the legendary Palghat Mani Iyer. Though he lived for a brief period, he enjoyed huge fan following crowd in his short life span. He learnt the art from Palani Muthaiah Pillai, who himself was a great mridangam player. He was an illustrious son of an illustrious father who made a footprint of his own, in the field of Carnatic music. He was a left-handed percussionist.

 

Pillai was born on April 20, 1908 to the great mridangam player Palani Muthaiah Pillai and his wife, Unnamulai Ammal. He was born into a musical family and most of his ascendants belonged to a distinguished line of percussionists. He learned mridangam under the tutelage of his father. He was influenced a lot by noted mridangam artist Dakshinamurthy Pillai who later became his mentor and father figure. During his teens Pillai accompanied almost all stalwarts of Carnatic music and earned fame to his credit. After 20, he accompanied Chittoor Subramanya Pillai and the famous Alathur Brothers. He created many major pallavis for the brothers. The left-handed Palani could play the khanjira with equal felicity and his performances with Mani Iyer worth praising.

 

Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar played a significant role in the career of Palani who gave him many opportunities. Pillai gave special attention to his costumes while appeared in concerts. He was always dressed in white muslin shirts and snow white Khadi Dhoti, wore neatly. He was married to Rajammal, one among the singing 'Kolar Sisters'. The couple had one daughter.
