Palagummi Padmaraju Biography

Palagummi Padmaraju was a noted writer, novelist and poet belonging to Telugu literature. Many of his works have been adopted on big screen too. In 1985 he received Sahitya Academy award for his work, Galivana. In 1952 his short story ‘Cyclone’ won an international prize conducted by New York Herald Tribune, when it was selected amongst 53 stories from 23 countries. He has contributed over 60 short stories and all these works have been published in three volumes titled as Galivana, Padava Prayanam and Eduruchusina Muhurtham. He was brilliant in delineating the psychological aspects of different kinds of people. He wrote dialogues for many movies like Bangaru Papa (1954), Sri Rajeshwari Vilas Coffee Club (1976) and Bhagya Rekha (1957). He also wrote lyrics for a few movies.

 

He was born in Tirupatipuram of West Godavari District in 1915. After graduation, he started his professional career as a teacher. He worked in Government P. R. College, Kakinada as a science lecturer during the period 1939-1952. Well-known music composer and lyric writer, Palagummi Viswanatham was his younger brother. His first published short story is Subbi. As a novelist, his published works are     Batikina College, Nalla Regadi, Ramarajyaniki Rahadaari and Rendo Ashokudi Munalla Palana.  

 

He had an association with Telugu cinema also. Apart from writing stories for a few movies, he has also written film dialogues and song lyrics since 1950s. Based on his work a tele film was made in 1995 titled Stri. It was produced by NFDC Doordashan and it starred Rohini, Vijay, P. L. Narayana, S. Bheemeswara Rao, K. K. Sarma and Bachoori, Gopalaraju doing pivot roles. He passed away in 1983.
