P. V. Rajamannar Biography

Pakkala Venkitarama Rajamannar, shortly known as P. V. Rajamannar was a judge of Tamil Nadu and a well known politician and was active participant in Arts as well. He was the first appointed chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi in New Delhi. In 1964, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, for his overall contributions to Indian art. He has also served as the acting Governor of Madras State from 1957 to 1958. He was the first Indian to become Chief Justice of Madras High Court after independence from 1948 to 1961. He had a bright career in Law and administration and one of the prominent personalities of Tamil Nadu post Indian independence.

 

P. V Rajamannar was also the Chairman of The Fourth Finance Commission of India during the period, 1966 to 1969. When DMK government was newly formed in Tamil Nadu, under the leadership of Dr. M. Karunanidhi, P.V. Rajamannar was appointed as the Chairman of a 3 member committee P.V. Rajamannar committee to study the State Autonomy and Centre-State relations by the then newly elected DMK government.

 

A few of the books published by P. V. Rajamannar include – Rajamannaru natikalu: Ayidu ekanka natikalu, Aesthetic experience, (Sir George Stanley endowment lectures), Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu ... With a foreword by ... Dr. P. V. Rajamannar, etc by Sambidananda Das and P. V. Rajamannar (1958), First Report of the Study Group Reviewing Legislation Affecting Banking: Banking Legislation (1971), Sardaru Papadu, Srutitappinaragam and Report, 1971. He was the first chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi, highest Indian academy for arts in New Delhi. He was born in the year 1901 and died in 1979 aged 78. In his honour, Justice P V Rajamannar Salai Road in K. K. Nagar, Chennai was named after him.
