P. T. Kunju Muhammed Biography

P. T. Kunju Muhammed is a noted politician, producer, screenwriter and director of Malayalam cinema, associated with parallel cinema. His movies have won many state and national awards. Magrib released in 1993 which showed the cultural life of Muslims of Malabar, was his first movie. In 1998 he directed the movie Garshom and received State award for best writer/story for this movie. Both these movies had actor Murali handling the pivot role. Paradeshi (2007) was his last release, and this movie too earned critics’ appreciation. The movie also bagged him Kerala State Film award for best story writer. He has served as MLA of state assembly twice in 1994 and 1996.

 

He was born in Chavakkad of Thrissur district in the year 1949. He completed graduation from St. Thomas College, Thrissur. Since college days he was associated with student politics and leftist movement. As a successful politician he has been elected to Kerala state assembly twice in 1994 and 1994 as a leftist candidate. His movies too reflect leftist ideologies to some extent.

 

He made his directorial debut with Magrib in 1993, which accumulated numerous awards. The movie starred Murali, Sreenivasan, V. K. Sreeraman and Saranya in lead roles. The movie was set against the ups and downs of an ancestral Muslim family spanning over 50 years. Later he directed two more Malayalam movies – Garshom in 1998 and Paradeshi in 2007 winning him many accolades. He has also co-produced the movies - Aswathamavu, Swaroopam and Purushartham. He has also appeared in one movie – Uppu. He regards movies of 1970s as the benchmarks for ascertaining the quality of films being made at present.
