P. Sathasivam Biography

P. Sathasivam currently serves as the governor of Kerala state since 31 August 2014. Prior to be appointed as the governor of Kerala, following the controversies related to Sheela Dixit’s forced resignation from the post, Sathasivam served as the 40th Chief Justice of India from 2013 to 2014, only the second Tamilian to reach this level. He is the first person serving as Chief Justice to be appointed as the Governor of a state. He was appointed as Judge of Supreme Court on 21 August 2007 and has a long term association with Madras High Court since his first phase of career.

 

He was born to Palaniswamy and Natchiammal at Kadappanallur near Bhavani in Erode district on 27 April 1949. After graduation from Sivakasi, he completed LLB from Government Law College Chennai and enrolled as an advocate on 25 July 1973 at Chennai. Later he moved to the posts - Additional Government Pleader, Special Government Pleader and finally appointed as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court on 8 January 1996. Later he served at Punjab and Haryana High Court and finally became Judge of Supreme Court on 21 August 2007. He served as the Chairman of the General Council of the Gujarat National Law University during this period.

 

In the honorable period as a judge, he is known for giving some landmark judgments. Verdict in the controversial triple-murder case of Stains, where Dara Singh was convicted, infamous Jessica Lal murder case and judgment in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, sentencing Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt to five years imprisonment are among those. He was also dragged into the controversies related to "Graham Staines judgement".
