He was born on February 24, 1934, at Konerirajapuram. His father Dr. P. N. Subramaniam was a medical practitioner. PSN exhibited his music talents quite at a young age. His music talents were well supported by his parents. He learnt under Sangitakalanidhi Mudikondan Venkatarama Iyer, before joining as disciple of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer in the early 1950s. Since the age of 15 he started giving public concerts and also performed for All India Radio. In the second half of 1950s he moved to Chennai where he established as a versatile artist.
