P. R. Varalakshmi Biography 
P. R. Varalakshmi is an Indian actress associated with south Indian film industry, who predominantly worked during the period 1970s and 1980s. She was a prominent lead actress during the 1980s and later moved to character roles. She has done around 600 film roles in the 4 south Indian languages, apart from a few Hindi roles. Vazhaiyadi Vazhai in 1972, directed by K. S. Gopalakrishnan marked her film debut and the movie was a hit. She started her film career as a heroine, though she couldn’t make it big. Later she moved to character roles. Vazhaiyadi Vazhai, Ore Sakshi, Deivamsham, Shankarlal and Kaadu are among her memorable roles. She also appeared in a few television serials.
She played female lead in her debut film - Vazhaiyadi Vazhai in 1972. The Tamil movie was directed by K. S. Gopalakrishnan. P. R. Varalakshmi belonged to a non-filmy background and for the same reason there was no one to guide her. So she took less significant Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam roles later. Though she has worked with all leading heroes of south Indian film industry, she was not able to make a mark up to her expectations. Yet through the mother roles she played later she created a niche of her own and has done around 600 films in total.
1973 film Kaadu was her debut Malayalam film and later she worked in less-known films like Sukhathinte Pinnale, Swathu, Kazhukan, Jumbulingam, Himam etc. She was also seen in Hariharan’s Lava in 1980 in a character role. Thirupathi Ezhumalai Venkatesa, Unna Nenachen Pattu Padichen, Mayandi, Padai Veetu Amman and Mustaffa are some of her Tamil films. She was seen in the television series Tiger Thathachari.
