P. K. Sarangapani Biography

P. K. Sarangapani was a noted playwright and screenwriter of Malayalam, mostly known for writing stories based on Vadakkan pattukal of Malabar – the stories of brave warriors. He wrote maximum screenplays for Kunchacko's Udaya Studios in the golden era of Malayalam cinema, which gave emphasis on such historic themes onscreen. He wrote the screenplay of 36 films for Malayalam, most notable ones being Neela Ponman, Umma, Acharam Ammini Osaram Omana, Cheenavala, Unniyarcha, Othenante Makan, Aromalunni, Palattu Koman, Postmane Kananilla, Thumbolarcha,Kannappanunni, Kadathanadan Ambadi, Aromal Chekavar, Mallanum Mathevanum, Kadathanattu Makkam, Palattu Kunjikannan, Thaara and Neeli Sali.

 

He was born in Alappuzha district in 1925 to Arattuvazhi Anthekkuparambil Veettil Pappi and Kankali. He worked in the South Indian Rubber Works and was associated with leftist movements in Kerala. He participated in the infamous Punnapra-Vayalar uprising which killed many people. He started his literal career too, in order to add fuel to leftist movement in Kerala and he poured communist thoughts in paper through his early works. Ballatha Duniyavu, Chilamboli, Bhavana and Avarente Makkal are his noted plays.

 

He joined Udaya studios in the 1960s as a script writer and wrote numerous classic Malayalam hits, mostly associated with Vadakkan pattukal. He marked his debut through Umma, the first Muslim social film in Malayalam. Kadathanattu Makkam, Palattu Kunjikannan, Aaromalunni, Unniyarcha and Othenante Makan are his noted works based on Kerala warriors. Kadathanadan Ambadi (1990), based on Vadakkan Pattukal was his last released work and co-incidentally it was the last released movie of Malayalam legendary actor Prem nazir as well. He passed away before the completion of film shooting and later his role was played by a dup, who later became a popular character artist and villain on Malayalam screen, Shammi Thilakan, son of legendary actor Thilakan. Sarangapani died on 2 February 2011 at a private hospital in Cherthala.
