P. K. Jayalakshmi Biography

P. K. Jayalakshmi is a youth leader and politician who currently serves as the Minister for Welfare of Backward Communities in the Government of Kerala. She is the first tribal minister in Kerala government and one of the youngest ministers in the history of Kerala Politics. She became a minister at the age of 30, thus becoming one of the youngest female ministers of Kerala. The first Adivasi Minister of Kerala, he joined Oommen Chandy’s cabinet after winning 2011 State Assembly elections from Mananthavady constituency.

 

She was born in Valat on 3 October 1980. She belonged to the Kurichiya tribal community who has been warriors of great Pazhassi raja during his battle against British. The community is known for its skills in hunting and Jayalakshmi has been an ace archer and a silver medalist in state level competitions. She lives in a joint family and she has 5 siblings – three sisters and two brothers. She completed Communicative English from Kannur University and holds a diploma in Computer Science. She was spotted by Rahul Gandhi during the talent hunt in the past.

 

In 2011 state elections, she stood as a contestant from Mananthavady constituency of Wyanad district and got elected. She was sworn in as MLA for the first time and later added as a cabinet minister. She was only 30 years when she was given the portfolio ‘Welfare of Backward Communities’ by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. She is the youngest minister of Oommen Chandy’s cabinet right now.

 

On 10 May 2015, she married her cousin C. A. Anilkumar according to the traditions of Kurichiya tribe. Anil Kumar is a farmer by profession and Jayalakshmi is only the third minister in Kerala to marry while holding office. The marriage was attended by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy as well as Opposition leader Achuthanandan. Her sisters have been married off earlier and she delayed her marriage due to her commitments in the political career, she has been associated since her college days. She came into politics through congress student’s wing - Kerala Students Union during her college days.
