P. C. Alexander Biography

P. C. Alexander was an Indian Administrative Service officer of 1948 batch. Padinjarethalakal Cherian Alexander is his full name and he belonged to Mavelikkara of Kerala. He was an Indian Administrative Service officer of 1948 batch. He has served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu from 1988 to 1990 and as the Governor of Maharashtra from 1993 to 2002. During his service in Maharashtra, he had additional charge of Goa from 1996 to 1998. He was considered as a candidate for the post of the President of India in 2002. He was Principal Secretary for former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and has been in the cabinet as India's Ministry of Commerce. He virtually served as Indira’s shadow and policy adviser for many years.

 

He has authored a few works of which his autobiography is the most noted one. It was titled Through the Corridors of Power. My years with Indira Gandhi, The Perils of Democracy, and India in the New Millennium are his other works. During his political career, he had served in United Nations also. Though he has been associated with Indian National Congress Party, he left the party to join National Democratic Alliance (India) during the last phase of his political career and has also been elected to Rajya sabha.

 

P. C. Alexander was born in 20 March 1921 in old Travancore Kingdom. His graduation was completed at University of Kerala. Alexander started his career as a civil servant in 1948 and later held many high positions of India including his life as a social worker and public service. He was a principal secretary to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and has also a brief career under Rajiv Gandhi. But he was replaced by Gandhi very soon due to his paternal behaviour.
