P. Balachandran Biography

P. Balachandran is a noted Malayalam writer, screenwriter and playwright associated with Malayalam cinema. He regularly plays character roles in Malayalam movies, most notable one being Korah in Trivandrum Lodge. After the success of this movie, he regularly appears in character roles in movies. He has also directed a few critically acclaimed movies like Ivan Megharoopan. One of the best and sensitive script writers of Malayalam cinema, Ulladakkam is his most noticed work. Punaradhivasam and Pavithram are other noticed works. In 2000, he wrote the script of National award winning film – Punaradhivasam.

He was born on February 2, 1952 in Sasthamkotta of Kollam District to Padmanabha Pillai and Saraswati Bhai. He is married to Sreelatha and the couple has two children. At present he retired from School of Lectures, Mahatma Gandhi University. At the age of 55, soon after retirement he decided to direct his first movie. A story that he already discussed with V. K. Prakash was in his mind. That’s how he made a film based on the life of poet P. Kunhiraman Nair – Ivan megharoopan. He is an old student of School of Drama in Thrissur.

Basically he is a theatre artist and noted playwright. He enjoys acting most, though known as a screenwriter, playwright and director. He believes himself that he experimented with different genres to satisfy the actor hidden inside him. He always rediscovers the acting potential of different characters, whenever he sits to write a story or screenplay. In the recent times, he earned popularity as an actor through character roles like Beautiful, Hotel California, Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus, Immanuel, Trivandrum Lodge, Nadan, Silence, Kadal Kadannoru Mathukkutty, Ithu Pathiramanal, Annayum Rasoolum etc.
