P. Adinarayana Rao Biography

P. Adinarayana Rao was a Telugu music director, film producer, lyricist and play writer. He co-founded "Aswini Pictures" with Akkineni Nageswara Rao and has produced several movies in Telugu and Tamil. Later, he produced several blockbuster Telugu movies under his own production house, Anjali Pictures. He was married to popular Telugu actress of 1950’s, Anjali Devi. Rao is credited to introducing Hindustani music to Telugu movies in contemporary flavour and simplified orchestration. He received Best Music Director for film Suvarna Sundari in the year 1957. He was also the scriptwriter of the same movie. Music directors like Satyam, Totakura Venkata Raju and Bollywood greats, Lakshmikant-Pyarelal have worked under his as assistants.

 

Adinarayana Rao was born in 1915 at Kakinada of East Godavari to Penupatruni Krishnayya Goud and Penupatruni Anasuya. His schooling was done at his native village. He started his film career, as a child artist at the age of six. He commonly featured in several mythological films. He learnt classical music under Patrayani Sitaramsastry. He started playing music instruments at the age of 12. Then he got associated with theatre of his native village. Black Market, Vasanta Sena and Veedhi Gaayakulu are his theatre works before entering movies. He was affectionately called by nickname "Abbayi Garu".

 

His debut film was Varudhini in 1946 where he wrote lyrics and composed music for two songs. Gollabhama directed by C. Pullaiah was his big break to the industry. Same film marked the lead debut of his future wife, Anjali Devi. With film Palletoori Pilla in 1950, he became an established name of the industry. He married Anjali Devi in 1948. Their granddaughter Saila Rao is also an actress. Under Anjali productions he has made movies in Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, and Hindi languages.
