Oommen Chandy Biography

Oommen Chandy is an Indian Politician and Chief Minister of Kerala. He served as the Chief Minister of Kerala from 2004 to 2006 and the Leader of the opposition party in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2011. He was born on 31^st October 1943 in Puthuppally, Travancore. Kunjoonju is his nickname. He leads the United Democratic Front party.

His parents are K.O. Chandy and Baby Chandy. He was born in an affluent Christian family. He studied at the St George High School Puthupally and at CMS College, Kottayam and SB College Changanassery and earned Bachelors’ degree in Law at Government Law College, Ernakulam. He joined the students’ wing of the party, Kerala Students Union. He serves as the union leader of many INTUC affiliated outfits. He served as the president of the students’ wing from 1967 to 1969 and elected as the president of the State Youth Congress in 1970.

He was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly 10 times. He served as the Minister of Labor in the Karunakaran Minstry and was in charge of the Home portfolio in the second ministry of Karunakaran. He also served as Finance Minister. He was elected as the Congress Legislature Party leader in 2004. He was the leader of the opposition in the 12^th Kerala Legislative Assembly.

After the victory of 2011 assembly election he was elected as the leader of the Congress legislative party and was made as the Chief Minister of Kerala. This is his second tenure as the Chief Minister of the state. Some of his major achievements include rehabilitation of Moolampilly victims, resettlements of the evictees who had lost their homes, providing jobs to the members of evicted families at the Vallarpadam project, etc. He also increased the aid to the remaining Endosulfan victims. He attempted to enforce transparency by live webcast streaming of Chief Minster’s office, 24 by 7 on 1^st July 2011.
