Omung Kumar Biography

Omung Kumar is a National award winning Bollywood director, who shot to fame after directing 2014 biographical sports drama Mary Kom starring Priyanka Chopra. The movie was a biopic of an Indian legend female boxer - Mary Kom, who made India proud through her achievements in Olympics and other world championships. The movie accumulated numerous awards and nominations at National Film Awards apart from Filmfare, Screen and IIFA. The movie received National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment for the year 2014. Prior to directing movies he has been a successful production designer, and art director.

Earlier he has worked as a production designer with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films such as Black (2005) and Saawariya (2007). Prior to directing movies, he has also worked in the art department as art director. Black and Saawariya are best instances of his hard work. He made his directorial debut with the 2014 biographical sports drama Mary Kom, which was a blockbuster hit. It was nominated at the 60th Filmfare Awards in the Best Film and the Best Actress (Priyanka Chopra) categories. He is now planning to make the biopic of Sarabjit, where Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is to play protagonist’s sister’s role.

He was born and brought up in Mumbai. He doesn’t hold any filmy background. Since his childhood he wanted to be an actor. But later he got a role behind the camera and slowly film making became his passion. He started off with television, where he tried his luck as an anchor and even a model. Later he joined Sanjay Leela Bhansali's team and his career associated with Bollywood kicked off. He didn’t get any break to work as an actor. Associated with Bollywood since 2003 he worked as a production designer and art director for movies like Ishq Vishk, Chameli, Masti, Fida, Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Yuvvraaj and Krazzy 4.
