Nolini Kanta Gupta Biography

Nolini Kanta Gupta was a revolutionary, yogi and sage from Bengal who lived in the 20th century. He was also a writer, poet, linguistic and critic. He was deeply influenced by the revolutionary ideas of Sri Aurobindo and was also associated with the conspiracy in the Alipore bomb case. But later when Aurobindo changed his mission and decided to live his life as a sage, Nolini too joined him at Sri Aurobindo Ashram and served as his secretary and one of his trustees. He was associated with Sri Aurobindo Ashram throughout his life. Nolini Kanta Gupta died at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram on 7 February 1984.

 

Nolini Kanta Gupta was born on 13 January 1889 in Faridpur, East Bengal. He studied at Presidency College Calcutta. During his fourth year at college he joined the Maniktola secret society and discontinued his studies as well. He was deeply influenced by the ideas of Sri Aurobindo, and in the teens he turned a revolutionary. He was also associated with Alipore bomb case for which he was arrested. He spent one year at jail and after release he started his career as a journalist and an editor. He served as the sub-editor of two magazines started by Aurobindo for a couple of years.

 

He was a close associative of Aurobindo and was chosen as one among the 4 disciples at his newly started Ashram. Aurobindo also taught him several foreign languages. He permanently moved to Ponchicherry when Sri Aurobindo Ashram was started. Throughout his literal career, he authored 60 books belonging to Bengali, French and English languages. He passed away in 1984 aged 94.
