Nitin Gadkari Biography

Nitin Gadkari is an Indian politician who served as the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was made to lead the party in December 2009 after the defeat of the party in the 2009 General Elections.

 

Nitin Gadkari was born on 27th May 1957 in Nagpur in Maharashtra in India. When he was a student, he was a part of the student union ABVP and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He completed his education in law from Nagpur University. He married Kanchan Gadkari and has three children namely Nikhil, Sarang and Ketki.

 

From the year 1995 to 1999 he served as the Minister of Public Works Department of the Government of Maharashtra. He always supported privatization and did many works for that. During his tenure as the minister, he has constructed many roads, highways, flyovers including the Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

 

He served as the Chairman of the National Rural Road Development Committee. According to his report, the rural connecting scheme Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana was launched. In 1989 he was elected to the Maharashtra Government Legislative Council from graduates constituency from Nagpur Region and was reelected in 1990, 1996 and unopposed in 2002.

 

He served as the member of the High Power Committee for Privatization in the Government of Maharashtra and as the Chairman of the Mining Polity Implementation Committee and Metropolis Beautification Committee in the Government of Maharashtra. He also served as the State President of Bharatiya Janata Party of Maharashtra State.

 

He serves as the founder and chairman of the Poly Sack Industrial Society Ltd, promoter and director of Nikhil Furniture and Appliances Pvt. Ltd, founder and member of the Antyodaya Trust and founder and chairman of the Empress Employees Co-operative Paper Mills Ltd. He is also an agriculturist who has major interests in water management and solar energy projects. He was criticized by the India Against Corruption party to flout rules to help his own industries.
