Nirmal Chandra Chatterjee Biography

Nirmal Chandra Chatterjee was the president of the Bengal Hindu Mahasabha and the vice-president of the All-India Hindu Mahasabha. He was a jurist who served as the vice president of the International Commission of Jurists - Indian Branch. He was known as a prominent lawyer, intellectual, and Hindu revivalist and nationalist during 1940s and 1950s. The famous politician and former parliamentarian associated with Communist Party of India - Somnath Chatterjee is his son. Though Nirmal stood as Hindu revivalist, his son has been a fiercely anti-Hindutva communist leader from Bengal. His wife Binapani Debi was a homemaker.

 

Nirmal Chandra Chatterjee was born on 19th October 1895 in Boinchee of Hoogly District. He completed his school education from various schools at Kolkata before joining Scottish Church College to do his graduation course. He also completed LLB from University of Kolkata. He completed his academic studies at University College, London. Later he returned to India and started his professional career as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India. He moved to Kolkata where he continued with his professional career. He has held several decorative positions of Indian judiciary including the vice president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, treasurer of the Bar Association of India, president of the All India Civil Liberties Council, and vice president of the International Commission of Jurists - Indian Branch.

 

During his professional career, as a senior personality he has represented India at several Law Conferences like Common Wealth Law Conference in Sydney, International Bar Conference at Salzburg etc. He was also associated with Indian politics and was a member of First, Third and Fourth Lok Sabhas during 1950s and 1960s as a representative of Hindu Maha Sabha. He was active in his social and political life till he passed away in 1971.
