Nihar Ranjan Gupta Biography

Nihar Ranjan Gupta was a popular Bengali novelist who is the creator of the fictional detective character Kiriti Roy. He was a dermatologist also. 45 of his novels have been adapted for feature films in Hindi and Bengali. Bollywood classics - Meri Surat Teri Ankhen (1963), Uttar Falguni (1963) and Mamta (1966) are among those works. Amitabh Bachchan - Rekha starrer Do Anjane is also an adopted work of Gupta. During the Second World War, Gupta served as an army doctor in different countries. He has also served as the editor of children’s magazine - Sabuj Sahitya.

 

He was born on 6 June 1911 in Jessore, Bengal. Gupta came from a prestigious Kabiraj family of Jessore, now a part of Bangladesh. He was born to Satya Ranjan Gupta and Labangalata Devi. His father worked at Kolkata where Nihar spent his childhood. Due to his father's transferable job, he had to attend several schools. While at college, his sister died due to scorpion bite and hence Gupta determined to become a doctor. Thus he joined Carmichael Medical College where he completed MBBS. Later he served as an army doctor under British government. He was posted in Chittagong, Burma and Egypt during World War Second. After the war, he completed post-graduation in medicine from UK, specialized in dermatology. Later he joined the Calcutta Medical College and worked under different medical hospitals.

 

Gupta was interested in writings since childhood. Once he went to Shantiniketan to seek Tagore’s blessings. At the age of 18 he composed his first novel, Rajkumar. During his stay in England he developed a keen interest in detective stories and met Agatha Christie. After his return to India, he wrote his first detective novel - Kalo Bhramar. His detective character Kiriti Roy was a part of this novel. Gupta has composed over two hundred novels, plays, short stories and essays. Ulka, Badshah, Lalubhulu, Uttarphalguni, Asti Bhagirathi Tire, Mayur Mahal, Devyani, Neeltara, Mayamriga, Komalgandhar and Nishipadma are his famous novels.
