Nemai Ghosh (director) Biography

Nemai Ghosh was a national award winning film director and cinematographer, best known for his highly acclaimed and neo-realistic Bengali film – Chinnamul released in 1950. It was the first Indian film that dwelt with the partition of India and the pivot roles were played by Gangapada Basu, Bijon Bhattacharya, Ritwik Ghatak and Shobha Sen. The cinematography was also handled by himself. But the movie was a commercial failure. The great director Ritwik Ghatak started his film career as an assistant with this film. Paadhai Theriyudhu Paar (Tamil film 1960) and Sooravali (1981) are Nemai’s other works as a film director while he moved camera for the movies - Chinnamul (1950) and Anubavi Raja Anubavi (1967). Associated with Tamil cinema for many years, he started the Madras Film Society.

 

Nemai Ghosh was born in Kolkata in 1914. He started off his career as a stage actor associated with Little Theatre Group formed by Utpal Dutt. He made his film debut as an independent cinematographer and director in the year 1950 – Chinnamul. Impressed by the film, Russian film director Vsevolod Pudovkin bought the print of this film and later released in 188 theaters in Russia. Though neo-realistic film was highly praised by critics it met with a commercial failure which prompted him to move to Chennai where he started his career as a cinematographer for Tamil movies.

 

But the genius’ mind didn’t keep quiet and he directed his second film, though in Tamil. The movie titled - Paadhai Theriyudhu Paar released in 1960 won National award for best feature film in Tamil. The movie starred K. Vijayan, S. V. Subbiah and S. V. Sahasranamam in the lead roles.  In 1981, he directed his third and last film – Sooravali in Tamil. He was also active in the Film Society movement in Chennai, labour movement of employees and later also started the Madras Film Society in the metro city. He passed away in 1988.
