Neel was born in 1979 in Kolkata to the ace filmmaker Anjan Dutt and Chanda Dutt. His mother is a retired school teacher. Dutt completed his Masters in English Literature from the University of Kolkata in 2002. During his early teens when his father used to write lyrics for movies, Neel used to assist his father with a guitar. Their first album titled ‘Shuntey Ki Chao’ was released in 1995 by HMV.

An English film Bow Barracks Forever marked Neel’s debut as an independent music composer while he was doing his PG. Though a delayed release, the movie was showcased in several film festivals. Thus the bilingual The Bong Connection (2007) became Neel’s first released film album. He experimented with fusion music and gave many memorable songs to Bengali music. He formed Friends of Fusion (FOF), a contemporary fusion band with a group of friends in 2007.
