Nayan Mongia Biography

Nayan Mongia is a former Indian cricketer who played as wicket keeper batsman for India during 1990’s till 2000. He still holds the Indian record of highest number of catches by a wicket keeper in a test match. He has caught 8 batsmen behind the wicket twice in his career. He also shares with M.S. Dhoni the record for most dismissals by an Indian Wicket-keeper in a Test. He has played 44 Tests, 140 one-day internationals and 158 first class matches during his two-decade-long cricketing career and finally retired from first class cricket in December 2004. He was 35 year old during the retirement.

Nayan Ramlal Mongia was born on 19 December 1969 in Vadodara. He made his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Lucknow in 1993-94 and has been the wicket keeper batsman during the reigning trio of bowlers of Indian team – Anil Kumble, Prasad and Srinath. He has also been successfully associated with star trio batsmen of Indian team – Sachin, Ganguly and Dravid from middle 1990’s to the end of the decade. He has been always active behind the stumps with appeals and appreciations and very often, his over-appealing used to irritate field umpires and prompt to give him a percentage of match fees as penalty. His signs like ‘Ayyo’ behind the stumps have always been appreciated by viewers, during an era when cricket ODIs had just started to capitalize on Indian brains and televisions during middle 1990’s.

Though he is known for his wicket keeping talent, he often bats when situation demands. In ODI records include - 1272 runs in 140 matches at an average of 20.19 runs, and 110 catches besides stumping 44 batsmen. He has played 44 Tests and scored 1442 runs at an average of 24.04 with one century (152) and six half centuries. He played his last ODI in the 1999-2000 Asia Cup against Pakistan in Dhaka. He was dropped from the team following match fixing allegations. In first class cricket, he has in account 7736 runs with 12 centuries and 45 fifties.
