Navdeep Singh Suri Biography

Navdeep Singh Suri is an Indian diplomat and Indian Foreign Services officer from Amritsar, Punjab. He joined Foreign Service in the year 1983 and has completed more than 30 years as an officer. He is the grandson of great writer and freedom fighter, Nanak Singh, hailed as ‘The Father of Modern Punjabi novel'. This diplomat currently serves as the High Commissioner of India to Australia since 2015. Prior to this new appointment he served as Indian Ambassador to the Egypt. Suri is also known as an author.

 

Suri was born in Amritsar in the year 1959. He was born into the literal family of Nanak Singh, great Punjabi novelist and poet. His father Kulwant Singh runs a publishing house in Amritsar, while his mother is a retired college lecturer of Punjabi language. Suri completed Post-graduation in Economics from Guru Nanak Dev University. He spent his first 22 years in his hometown, and later in different parts of world as a part of his profession. He is married to Mani, an accomplished graphic designer and potter and the couple has two daughters. Following his grandfather’s legacy, Suri has translated three of Nanak’s classical Punjabi novels to English - Saintly Sinner, The Watchmaker and A Life Incomplete.

 

He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1983. Since then he has served as a diplomat in different countries and also served as India’s Consul General in Johannesburg. His first diplomatic assignment was at the Indian Embassy in Cairo, where he studied Arabic. Later he spent three years in Damascus and returned to Delhi in 1991. Later he worked with Indian Embassy in Washington DC in 1993, Indian mission in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania in 1997 and Indian High Commission in London in August 2000. Joint Secretary in Ministry of External Affairs, Ambassador to Egypt (2012 – 2015) and currently, High Commissioner to Australia are the elite positions he handled till now as an Indian diplomat.
