Nasreen Munni Kabir Biography

Nasreen Munni Kabir is a television producer, writer and director of UK, of Indian origin. Apart from directing numerous documentaries on cinema, she has also published 15 books on Indian cinema which include many conversations with Indian film celebrities as well. In 2005, she produced a two-part documentary on Shahrukh Khan, The Inner and Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan. She has also directed a 6-part documentary film on Lata mangeshkar for Channel 4 UK, titled – Lata in her own voice. "A. R. Rahman The Spirit of Music" in 2011 and 'Conversations with Waheeda Rehman' in 2014 are her recent works on Indian celebrities.

 

In Search of Guru Dutt (1989) is her documentary work on legendary film maker Guru Dutt. Bollywood: The Indian Cinema Story, In the Company of a Poet: Gulzar, The immortal dialogue of K. Asif's Mughal-e-azam, Talking Songs: Javed Akhtar, Yours Guru Dutt: intimate letters of a great Indian filmmaker and Guru Dutt: a life in cinema are some other works.

 

She was born in Hyderabad in 1950. At the age of 3, she moved to London along with her parents. Later she moved to Paris where she started her studies on films. She also worked as an assistant of documentary films during this period. In 1982 she got settled in London and joined as Channel 4 TV's consultant on Indian Films. Since then she is busy with Indian film documentaries for Channel 4 TV. In 1983 and 1985 she organized two Indian film festivals. ‘Movie Mahal’ is the first documentary film she made on Indian cinema. The 46-part series was aired on Channel 4 TV.
