Naresh Trehan Biography

Naresh Trehan is a renowned cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon, perhaps the most successful heart surgeon in India. He has completed more than 45 years in this field. He served as personal surgeon to the President of India since 1991. For his contributions to Indian medicine, he has received many honours including Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award. Currently he serves as the chairman and managing director and chief cardiac surgeon of MedantaTM-The Medicity, one of the best cardiac facilities in the world.

 

He is married to Madhu Trehan, the founder-editor of India today group. V. V. Purie, owner of Thomson Press and the co-founder of India Today group was his father-in-law. Aroon Purie, one of the top influential figures of Indian media who currently serves as the publisher of India Today, the chief executive of the India Today Group and the editor-in-chief of ‘India Today’ and Reader's Digest India is his brother-in-law. He met Madhu when both were 16 and they got married in 1969. The couple has two daughters. Though she served as the founder editor of India today magazine, she moved abroad with her husband soon after she conceived, giving full responsibly of the magazine to her brother.

 

Trehan is the founder, executive director and chief cardiovascular surgeon of Escorts Heart Institute and Research Center (EHIRC) in New Delhi, founded in the year 1988. He is also the Founder Chairman of Medanta - The Medicity at Gurgaon, 2,000-bed multi-specialty hospital, and the Chairman of Global Health Private Ltd. In the career spanning to about 45 years, he has performed over 35,000 successful heart surgeries.
