Narendranath Mitra Biography

Narendranath Mitra was a renowned writer and poet of Bengali language. India’s official entry to Academy awards – Saudagar starring Big B and Nutan was inspired from his short story, Ras. Satyajit Ray’s Mahanagar in 1964 was inspired from his story, Abataranika. Bengali movie Phera by Buddhadeb Dasgupta was also an adapted version of his short story. Apart from a noted writer and poet, he worked as an editor and journalist as well. He had a long term association of 25 years with Anandabazar Patrika. He was associated with Bengali newspaper from 1951 to 1975. As a writer, he is popular in India as well as Bangladesh even now.

 

His published works include – Headmaster, Mohanagar, Chilekotha, Surjasakkhi, Sreshtha Golpo, Ultoroth, Sukh Dukher Dheu, Deeppunjo, Chorai Utrai, Osomotol, Chenamahal, Misrarag, Jatrapath, Holde Bari, Dehomon, Suklapakhya, Durvashini, Okhore Okhore, Rupmonjori and Shandhyarag. Many of his works have been included in the school and college syllabus in Bangladesh.

 

He was born in Faridpur of present day Bangladesh in the year 1916. He was based in Kolkata and after partition he chose to remain in India. He completed graduation from Bangabasi College, University of Calcutta. He worked at Dum Dum ordnance factory in Kolkata during the Second World War and after that he joined Kolkata National Bank. He joined the daily Anandabazar Patrika in 1951 and was associated with it till his death in 1975. He has also worked as a journalist and editor of the magazines - 'Krishok', 'Swaraj' and 'Satyajug'.

 

The highly acclaimed movie of Satyajit Ray - Mahanagar was inspired from his story, Abataranika. The movie starred Anil Chatterjee, Madhabi Mukherjee and Jaya Bhaduri handling pivot roles.
