Narayan Gangopadhyay Biography

Narayan Gangopadhyay was a renowned writer associated with Bengali literature. Also called Narayan Ganguly, he excelled as a novelist, poet, essayist, and short story writer. His real name is Taraknath Gangopadhyay and ‘Narayan’ is his penname. Uponibesh in 3 volumes, Shilalipi, Oshidhara, Somrat O Sreshthi, Mantramukhar, Mohananda, Swarnaseeta, Nishijapon, Bidushok, Boitalik, Vatiali, Podoshonchar, Trophy, Lalmati, Krishnapakkha, Amabossar Gan, Alokporna etc are some of his popular novels. Saper Mathay Moni, Golposongroho, Sreshto Golpo and Swanirbachito Golpo are his short story collections. Varate Chai, Bhim Badh, Agontuk and Porer Upokar Korio Na are his plays. Charmurti, Charmurtir Abhijan, Abyartha Lokhyobhed Ebong, Porer Upokar Korio na etc belong to Children’s literature. He has also authored a few satire works and essays.

 

Taraknath Gangopadhyay was born on February 8, 1918 in Baliagingi, Dinajpur in North Bengal. To avoid confusions with another writer with the same name, he used the name Narayan Gangopadhyay for his literary works. He completed graduation from Brajamohan College in Barishal followed by his Master’s degree. He received first rank in M.A. in Bengali. He received his Ph.D. degree for his research on Sahitye chhotogolpo. Known as an iconic figure in the teaching field, he taught at various educational institutions during his lifetime.

 

He blended his patriotism and romance through his works. He was leaned towards leftist ideas and those well reflected in his works as well. His epic novel Upanibesh is contextualized in Sunderbans, while his novels - Samrat o sreshthi, Mahananda and Lalmati explored the declining traditional culture of a tribe. Lakshmir Pa, Itihas, Har, Tas, and Hariner Rang are among his brilliant short story works. Towards the end of his life, his works were mostly concentrated on to journal writings. He died in his middle ages of 52.
