Nabinchandra Sen Biography

Nabinchandra Sen was one of the prominent literals of Bengal before Tagore. He was a noted poet and writer of Bengali language. He wrote an epic trilogy on Mahabharata – Raivatak, Kurukkhetra and Provash. Abakash Ranjani (1871) and Palashir Juddha (1875) are his poetry collections while Amitabha, Khrishter Jibani and Cleopatra are his biography works on Buddha, Jesus Christ and Cleopatra respectively. Bhanumoti is his poetic novel and he has also done some translation works, apart from his autobiography works. Famous Brahmo Samaj philosopher, Keshub Chunder Sen was his brother. His son, Pramathalal Sen was also a well-known philosopher.

 

He was born in Chittagong of present-day Bangladesh on 10 February 1847. He spent his childhood in Chittagong where he completed his school education. He graduated from Scottish Church College in 1868. He also worked as a teacher at the famous Hare School for a short period before joining administrative services as a Deputy Magistrate. His autobiography work - Amar Jiban in 5 volumes is a great record of his administrative services and an important document of Bengali politics in the late 19th century. He retired from administrative services in 1904. Many of his works are now a part of school and university syllabuses.

 

His first volume of poetry, Abakash Ranjani, was published in 1871. He published its second volume in 1877. Most of his early works were published in ‘Education Gazette’. The biography works of Jesus, Buddha, and Cleopatra and translations of Gita and Markandeya Purana in the Bengali language established him as a popular Bengali writer of late 19th century and one of the prominent names before the era of Rabindra Nath Tagore arrived.
