Nabaneeta Dev Sen Biography

Nabaneeta Dev Sen is a well known contemporary writer from Bengal. She was the wife of Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Amartya Sen, but the couple divorced in 1976. The couple has three daughters including one adopted daughter. Antara Dev Sen is a journalist and Nandana Sen is a noted film artist and writer. Nabaneeta is one among the most writers of Bengali literature at present. She is the daughter of poet couple - Narendra Dev and Radharani Devi. In 2000, she received Padma Shree. Sahitya Akademi Award (1999), Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award and Mahadevi Verma Award (1992) are a few among those received honours.

 

Nabaneeta Dev Sen was born on 13 January 1938 in Kolkata. She graduated from Presidency College and did her PG from Jadavpur University, Calcutta. She also holds Masters with Distinction from Harvard University and PhD from Indiana University. Later she did her post-doctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley and Newnham College, Cambridge University. While doing her studies and research, she has been a part of several international Artists' Colonies. Yaddo and MacDowell Colony of US were among those. She has held the Maytag Chair of Creative Writing and Comparative Literature at Colorado College 1988–1989 and has held important executive positions in many International academic bodies. In India, she has served as Jury member for Jnanpith award, Saraswati Samman, Kabir Samman, and Rabindra Puraskar. In 2002, Nabaneeta Dev Sen retired as Professor of Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University.

 

Nabaneeta Dev Sen has published more than 80 books in Bengali of all genius – Novels, poems, short stories, plays, criticism, travelogue, essays etc. Her first short story collection was Monsieur Hulor Holiday (1980). Other noted works include - Bama-bodhini, Truckbaahane Myakmahane, Nati Nabanita, Srestha kabita, Karuna tomar kon path diyev and Sita theke suru. She deals with a wide variety of social, political, psychological problems. She has also written many fairy tales and adventurous stories for kids.
