N. T. Rama Rao Biography

N. T. Rama Rao was a famous Telugu film actor and politician. His full name is Nadamuri Taraka Rama Rao. He was called as Anna garu and NTR by his followers. His debut film was Mana Desam in the year 1949 directed by L. V. Prasad. Though he had acted in a number of characters, he was famous for his portrayals of Hindu deities Rama and Krishna in his films. He was the founder of Telugu Desam Party in the year 1982 and served as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh thrice. Government of India honored him with Padma Shri award for his contributions to Telugu cinemas.

N. T. Rama Rao was born on 28th May 1923 at Nimmakuru, a small village at Gudivada. His parents are Venkataramamma and Laxmaiah. But he was brought up by his uncle Ramaiah and his wife Chandramma. Valluru Subba Rao taught him in his childhood days. He studied in municipal school from class VI. After passing the matriculation examination he joined the SRR and CVR College in Vijayawada to do his intermediate course, and then joined Andhra Christian College at Guntur for doing Bachelor of Arts course. He acted in plays since his childhood days.

He married Basava Tarakam in May 1942 and had eight sons and four daughters. Among them Nandamuri Balakrishna is the Telugu Cine star and Nadamuri Harikrishna is the Telugu Desam party leader. Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Nara Chandra Babu Naidu is his son-in-law. N. T. Rama Rao remarried at the age of 70 in 1993. His second wife was Lakshmi Parvathi who was a widow at that time. Three of his grandsons, N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Kalyan Ram, and Taraka Ratna are all actors of Telugu Cinema.

After his debut film Mana Desam, he appeared in many other films like Palletoori Pilla, Maya Bazaar, Sri Krishnarjuna Yudham, Daana Veera Soora Karna, Lord Rama, Cheeshma, Ravana, Arjuna, etc. He started Telugu Desam party and was elected as the 10th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He passed away on 18th January 1996. N. T. R. National Award is instituted in his honor by the State Government and this is given to those who contribute to the Indian film industry.
