N. S. Madhavan Biography

N. S. Madhavan is a well-established contemporary writer of Malayalam literature, who belongs to Kochi Kerala. His works include - short stories, novels, football columns and travel articles. Though belonging to the commercial capital of Kerala, he never used Kochi as the backdrop and its people as characters in any of his celebrated short stories.

 

N. S. Madhavan was born in Kochi in the year 1948. His schooling was done at Sree Rama Varma High School. After graduation in economics from Maharajas College, Ernakulam, he moved to the capital city for higher studies. He completed Masters in Economics from University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. It was during his stay in the city that he started writing. For his first published short story 'Sisu', he won first prize of Mathrubhumi magazine in the year 1970. In 1975, Madhavan joined the Indian Administrative Service where he was seconded to the Bihar cadre. As an IAS officer, he has administered several districts, sub-districts, departments, state and union secretariats.  

 

In the decade of 1980’s, he faced the problem of writer’s block and after a long break, his published work was 'Higuita', a short story published in the year 1990. After that he published four collections of stories, a novel and one collection of plays. Chulaimedile Savangal, Thiruth, Nilavili and Paryaya Kathakal are those short story collections. His short story works are reckoned by critics to be unique and noteworthy. His first and only novel was published in the year 2003 and it’s after his long term of 33 years as a writer. Lanthan Batheriyile Luthiniyakal is the name of his novel and it has been translated as Litanies of the Dutch Battery in 2010. His first book of plays - Randu Natangangal was published in the year 2006.
