N. S. Krishnan was an Indian comedian, actor and playback singer who was affectionately called as NSK and Kalaivanar. He was born on 29th November 1908 in Nagercoil in Travancore in India and attracted audience by his unique way of performing comedy. All his comedies carried a message for social uplifting.
He started his career as an artist of Villu Paattu and then started in act in stage shows and dramas. He owned his own touring company that conduct drama in various places. With the entry of films and film industry, he started to perform comedy roles. He is noted for his comedy dialogues.
He has acted in more than 150 films in Tamil languages. He married his comedy pair in films T. A. Madhuram. They had no children. He worked with leading stage artists like Pulimoottai Ramasamy, C. S. Pandian and Udumalai Narayana Kavi, etc. He is also a philanthropist, Gandhian and patriot.
He was arrested in 1940s for Lakshmikanthan Murder Case and was convicted and released later on appeal. He was attacked by some people on 8th November 1944 in Purasawalkam and though he escaped, had to be hospitalized. On the very next day Lakshmikanthan died mysteriously which led to the arrest of NSK together with Thiagaraja Bhagavathar. He lost his hard earned money to fight in this case.
He was a member of Dravidian Movement and in his memory Tamil Nadu Government built a memorial building called Kalaivanar Kalai Arangam in 1979. He was highly generous and gave great alms to the poor. Some of the films that he had worked on are Mangayarkkarasi, Nallathambi, Paithiyakkaran, Pavalakkodi, Alibabvum Naarpadhu Thirudargalum, Amarakavi, Kudumba Vilakku, Nam Kulandai, Madurai Veeran, Chakravarthiththirumagal, Raja Desingu, Ambikapathy, etc. He died on 30th August 1957 at the age of 49.
